The Opel GT was equipped with a base 1.1L OHV inline-four engine, which produced 67hp (SAE) at 6,000 rpm. However, most buyers chose the optional 1.9L overhead camshaft engine, which produced 102hp (SAE) at 5200 to 5400 rpm. Some of the early 1968 models also came with a slightly higher compression “H” code cylinder head. In 1971, due to emissions regulations, Opel reduced the compression ratio of the 1.9L engine used in the US, and output fell to 83hp (SAE). There also was a GT/J model, which was a less expensive version of the 1900-engined GT which was sold only in Europe. The standard transmission was a manual four-speed. A three-speed automatic was available with the 1.9L engine. The model run of the Opel GT lasted from 1968 to 1973.

The Opel GT uses a steel unibody and a front mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The engine is mounted far back in the chassis to improve weight distribution. The front suspension consists of upper A-arms and a lower transverse leaf spring.  Aside from the Opel’s styling, the unusual use of a transverse leaf-spring in the suspension was another shared trait with Chevrolet’s Corvette. A live axle and coil springs are used in the rear. The power-assisted braking system uses discs in the front, drums in the rear and steering is unassisted.

This example has been part of a predominant Orange County collection for over 11 years and this matching numbers car has covered only 23K Kilometers. This classic GT is a very straight forward and honest GT. The car received new blue paint from its previous owner and is in good condition, the car has a couple of minor paint flaws which can be seen in the attached photos.

This classic Opel has become very popular in the last few years and finding a clean car that has a non-cracked original dash without rear or nose damage is increasingly hard to find. The car has had a recent service including a Tune-Up, replacements of all fluids, new plugs, timing, new battery, oil change, radiator flush, and tire/brake Inspection. The sale includes books and manual. The car has a clean Montana title and no history of accidents. The interior, exterior, and running gear are in good condition. A unique collector’s item that is fun to drive and can be used as a daily driver.
