At the 1976 Paris Motor Show Ferrari unveiled the replacement for the 365 GT4 2+2. The new 400 was offered in two models: 400 Automatic, using a GM THM400 3-speed automatic transmission, and 400 GT, using a five-speed transmission. The 400 Automatic was the first Ferrari to have an automatic transmission. The 365’s V12 engine had been stroked to a displacement of 4.8 L (290 cu in) and given six 38 DCOE 110-111 Webers and now produced 340 PS (250 kW). 0–60 mph took 7.1 seconds. Other changes compared to the 365 GT4 2+2 included five-stud wheels to replace the knock-off hubs (Borrani wheels weren’t offered anymore), a revised interior, the addition of a lip to the front spoiler, and double circular taillight assemblies as opposed to triple. A total of only 502 examples were produced, 355 of which were Automatics and 147 GT’s.
This rare example has been part of a predominant Orange County collection for over 16 years. This matching numbers car has covered only 21K miles and is the first Ferrari model to have an automatic transmission. The most desirable of the 400 series, this early carbureted car was one of only 504 produced. The interior received a new leather interior within the last 500 miles which includes stitched Cavallino headrests and a custom center console (original refurbished burlwood console included). The car was fitted with custom HRE rims and matching low profile tires.
This classic Ferrari has had a recent service tune-up including replacements of all fluids, new plugs, timing, new battery, oil change, radiator flush, and tire/brake inspection. The car has a clean Colorado title and no history of accidents. The exterior is in very good condition. This Pininfarina designed Ferrari 400i has six double barrel side draft weber carburetors, the naturally aspirated 400 engine, and a 4.8 liter 12 cylinder producing 340 BHP. The automatic gearbox shifts cleanly. A unique collector’s item that can be used as a daily driver.
