The Sprite quickly became affectionately known as the “frogeye” in the UK and the “bugeye” in the US because its headlights were prominently mounted on top of the bonnet, inboard of the front wings. The car’s designers had intended that the headlights could be retracted, with the lenses facing skyward when not in use; a similar arrangement was used many years later on the Porsche 928. Cost-cutting by BMC led to the flip-up mechanism being deleted, therefore the headlights were simply fixed in a permanently upright position, giving the car its most distinctive feature. This gave the car its appeal as a result of its much-loved cute appearance. The body was styled by Gerry Coker, with subsequent alterations by Les Ireland following Coker’s emigration to the US in 1957. The car’s distinctive frontal styling bore a strong resemblance to the defunct American 1951 Crosley Super Sport. Exactly 48,987 “frogeye” Sprites were ever made.

This example was part of a predominant Orange County collection for over 10 years. This matching numbers car has covered only 86K Kilometers. The car was restored by the previous owner in beautiful Red/ black and the interior received new upholstery and new paint with less than 800 miles since restoration.

This classic Austin is an original left-hand drive example that has recently received a service including replacements of all fluids, new plugs, timing, new battery, oil change, radiator flush, and tire/brake inspection. The sale includes a black soft top and side curtains. The car has a clean Montana title and no history of accidents. The interior, exterior, and running gear are in very good condition. A unique collector’s item that can be used as a daily driver or a beautiful showpiece.

This car has a cassette player how cool. It has the logo floor mats as well. The best thing it’s a convertible. This a California car for sure.

A car is worth more than the price because of the memories it brings and the memories it creates. This a show piece of a car.

Sorry to hear your pop is gone, mine too. Cars have always been a part of my life and it is amazing how they bring back great memories. I would love for you to get this car. Feel free to reach out.

My dad had set one of these aside for me when I joined the service… I guess I stayed in too long because the car was gone once I got out. Now he is too and as much as I missed that car I will really miss seeing him smile while this digs into the curves.

This Bug-Eyed Sprite is a head turner. They are very special cars. I had one and I gave it to my son. He loves it to death. You don’t see them out there. It looks tip top!
