“Rare” ironically tends to be a common term used in today’s automotive culture. New cars made in small batches are rare by design. So what makes a vehicle authentically rare? Obscurity. This BMW 1600 GT is one such machine. Far less renowned than the 2002 or E30 M3, but excellent and significant in its own right.

The BMW 1600 GT is the product of when a German car company grows so quickly that it absorbs an independent Italian scooter maker and turns his graceful design into one of the most excellent sports coupes you’ve never heard of.

Designed by Italians and built by Germans, the 1600 GT is part of the BMW family by adoption. It may not look like any other BMW, but the performance is on-point for a company that would go on to define “sport sedan.” BMW reengineered the 1300 GT to use the same engine, gearbox, and independent rear suspension as the BMW 1600-2. And the whole package comes together for a wonderfully rare driving experience.

The BMW 1600 GT was only available for two years, 1967 and 1968, with a total of 1,259 produced. Only about 15 of these were imported into the USA. This particular 1600 GT was built in early 1968 and delivered to France. From which it was then purchased and imported to the US in 2018.

Unique to this car is how original the interior is. With original seats with their original vinyl, and even the carpets from 1968 are original. Also, the trunk is carpeted with the original fabric from 1968.

This 1600 GT in Charmonix white with its number-matching 1.6-liter M10 inline-four produces 105 hp. During its time, the BMW 1600 GT performance was excellent for its class, with a top speed of almost 120 mph (190 km/h) – largely thanks to the low curb weight of 2,116 lbs.

This 1600 GT underwent a major service by Oldenzaal Classics in the Netherlands prior to being purchased and imported to the US in 2018 and has since been maintained and serviced at CoupeKing in Southern California.

Completely turn-key inside and out, this 1968 BMW 1600 GT is an exceptional specimen, one to leave even the most die-hard BMW collectors scratching their heads and drooling at the same time. With the elegant styling combined with the practicality of 2+2 seating, moderate trunk space, a sophisticated BMW drivetrain, and independent rear suspension makes the car an excellent daily-drivable classic – for those who can find one.

Now offered with a certificate from BMW classic and a clean California title.
